THE ADVANTAGES
OF A GREEN ROOF

IT REDUCES ENERGY COSTS

A green roof is able to mitigate the changes in temperature and improve the energy efficiency of buildings by considerably increasing their thermal insulation. In summer, a green roof decreases the temperature of the roof, reducing water evaporation, cooling the roof and reducing the cost of air-conditioning buildings.

REDUCES MAINTENANCE COSTS

The green roof protects the waterproofing membrane from temperature changes, exposure to UV light and mechanical damage. The life of the waterproofing layer thus increases considerably and maintenance and replacement costs are reduced.

REDUCES THE EXISTING SEWAGE LOAD

A green roof can reduce water dispersal by 50-90%. The residual water flows from the roof slowly. This avoids overloading the existing sewage networks which are often insufficient. Installing green roofs in a large new development could avoid costs for the construction of new sewerage systems.

IMPROVES THE MICROCLIMATE

Green roofs cool and humidify the surrounding air by evaporation of water, thus creating a pleasant microclimate in their immediate vicinity, and helping to improve the urban centres.

REMOVES DUST AND TOXIC PARTICLES

The vegetation of green roofs helps retain dust and smog particles. The nitrates and other pollutants are absorbed into the substrate, thanks to plants, air and rainwater.

IMPROVES SOUND INSULATION

Areas with plants are characterized by a lower sound pressure as sounds are absorbed more than with rigid surfaces. Green roofs reduce reflected noise by up to 3 db and improve sound insulation by up to 8 db. This sound insulation is great for buildings close to busy roads, noisy areas or factories.

CREATE ADDITIONAL SPACE

Green roofs make additional space available for use as a private garden or sometimes as a public park, enabling urban planning in built-up areas (e.g. underground garages, etc.).

IT PROVIDES A NATURAL HABITAT

Green roofs compensate for the loss of green sites and land in the construction of buildings, they also recreate a natural habitat for birds and insects. They provide for the right opportunity to bring nature into the city.
